The author's advice is to change pace constantly: some sections have to be taken slowly and carefully, others can be attacked at speed. From above the route looks like a thin trail meandering across open ground, which is exactly why it is so punishing, with little margin on either side and plenty of direction changes. Expect a lot of restarts before you learn where to brake and where to commit.
